The tennis chain nickname was not widely used until the late 1980s. During the 1987 US Open, Chris Evert, winner of 18 Grand Slam titles, stopped in the middle of a close match to call a timeout. The force of the tennis star's swing had loosened the clasp of his eternity bracelet and sent him flying across the court. Evert asked the officials to pause the game while she searched for him.
From that day on, the eternity chain was known as the tennis chain. and became a very popular accessory, worn as a bracelet or necklace.
